For nearly four decades, Maxi Cohen has followed ayahuasca wherever it led and woven these experiences into three feature films.

During this evening,  Maxi will show clips from these three films and tell the stories behind them: how a Jewish girl from New York met Jesus in a jungle ceremony to how Indigenous leaders, veterans, Palestinians, and policymakers have all found their way into her lens, and how they are reshaping conversations about healing, government, and culture along the way.

The arc of films discussed includes:

• 2013: The Holy Give Me  — about a Santo Daime church trying to explain itself to confused governments, made to help US and European authorities understand ayahuasca before more lives were lost to misunderstanding and arrest.

• 2018: From Shock to Awe — an intimate look at the transformational journey of two combat veterans suffering from severe trauma as they abandon…
